Early music on the viol di gamba is some of the most haunting, beautiful music I know. I love this movie, but especially its soundtrack – and I love much else that Jordi Savall records and performs, too. It has further good associations for me as I successfully suggested this soundtrack for use in a version of Tony Kushner’s adaptation of Pierre Corneille’s “The Illusion” in Boston back in 1995, which I starred in (leather pants, rapier and dagger, long flowing locks and leather-boy Amanuensis included).
