Rufus,

Honestly......he isn't off. There are quite a few spells given as an oral tradition in mexico that literally can be traced to coptic christian magical practices.

Bryant has spent years researching and interviewing and his information is solidly based; though I will admit we did have differences of opinions, as anyone worth their salt will. But we never discredited his work, or findings.

May he rest in peace and may we all learn to respect the dead :)

Rufus,

I don't know if he is as into grimoires as you say, although I do know that he definitely does not claim to be a curandero. Generally though, I believe his characterizations of Mexican religiosity is spot on.

I will look into your site, especially the Neoplatonic elements. That kind of stuff is always welcome around here.

I too have frequented his mailing list. He makes some really badly-researched claims about the etymology of the word "grimoire." He is also very much opinionated in his belief in curanderismo. He has even been told that he himself is a curandero. He misrepresents curaderismo as a continuation of the living grimoire systems, and thinks that because a curandero has a grimoire, they must therefore understand and practice its teachings. I have books on voudoun and catholicism, and I am neither. Curanderos have my deepest respect. Holman does not.
